Damutan Elementary School in Hinoba-an Goes Solar to Power Learning and Clean Water Access

Hinobaan, Negros Occidental – Damutan Elementary School formally launched its 6KW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Hybrid System with Water Pump, marking a significant step toward sustainable and energy-resilient education in the municipality of Hinoba-an last October 22, 2025.

Following the said installation of the solar PV system, Project REconnect of Negrosanon Young Leaders Institute, in partnership with DepEd Negros Occidental, is now able to provide access to clean water by powering a water pump that supports the Gulayan sa Paaralan program, enhancing the feeding initiatives to combat malnutrition. It also supports the school’s water, sanitation, and hygiene program, ensuring safe water for school and community use.

“We are thankful for the support of NYLI at Damutan Elementary School, and we call on everyone to take care of the said system because it is for us and for the whole Damutan, indeed, from the sun, for the children and community of Damutan…clean energy for water, learning, livelihood, and life,” Julibeth P. Jesalva, Teacher-in-Charge of Damutan Elementary School exclaimed.

Honored guests and partners graced the occasion with inspiring messages of support and appreciation, including: Zaldy H. Reliquias,PhD, Municipal Local People’s Council President; Julito L. Felicano, CESE, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent; Rolando P. Jungco, Punong Barangay; Roralyn P. Arroz, Provincial Schools District Supervisor; Julibeth P. Jesalva, Teacher-In-Charge; and Kevin Gaitan, NYLI Executive Director.

Following the speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and solar PV system blessing officially inaugurated the new facility, which is expected to strengthen the school’s energy democracy and provide a more reliable energy source for its digital and learning activities.

In the afternoon, over 90 pupils attended a Community Education Session aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of renewable energy technologies within the local community.

Moreover, around 40 stakeholders including teachers, parents, barangay personnel joined the Solar PV Training led by our Technical Consultant Sir Jeffrey Lazaro, for the system will be operated and managed by the community members taking the lead to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Project REConnect is a collaborative initiative between Damutan Elementary School, NYLI Climate Solutions Center, and various local stakeholders, underscoring the commitment of educators, local government, and private partners to build a greener and more sustainable future for students and the broader community.
